Word nerds are getting their moment in the spotlight. The Abantu Book Festival brought African literature heavyweights to Soweto for four days of wordy celebration. This spread appeared in the November 2017 issue of Juice.
From 7 to 10 December, Soweto will be transformed into a literary village, with the best novelists, poets, playwrights, biographers, literary scholars, musicians, actors, activists, thinkers and readers taking over the city.
Celebrating the rich and diverse literary heritage emerging from the African continent, the second edition of the Abantu Book Festival will bring together black writers and readers to celebrate the written word. Activities range from book launches and readings to panel discussions and writing workshops, all featuring renowned authors. While the book remains the central medium of the festival, this year’s offering has music, poetry and film screenings woven into the mix.
Spend your days at the Eyethu Lifestyle Centre in Molofo before trundling over to the Soweto Theatre in Jabulani for evening sessions. Entry is free for day events, with night events costing only R20.
